ABSTRACT

The Embers of Resistance: DHFL short film depicts the poignant struggle of DHFL scam victims, blending haunting visuals of protests with fiery resistance. Senior citizens and youth unite, facing brutal police crackdowns, symbolizing the fight against crony capitalism. The film juxtaposes despair and defiance, leaving a stark message: “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied.” This OBMA project honors resilience and highlights systemic injustice.

OVERVIEW

A rain-drenched evening, heavy with smog, unfolds over the gloomy, uncanny and nearly unrecognizable streets of New Delhi, India. In this spectral haze, a procession of Indian senior citizens, victims of the Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) scam, marches with quiet determination, their candle flames flickering defiantly against the oppressive gloom. Each step resonates with years of resilience etched into their weathered faces as they possibly converge at Jantar Mantar, their silent protest mingled with sit-in hunger strikes. Placards rise like muted screams, demanding accountability for the DHFL scam.

But the fragile stillness fractures. Fiery youth protesters also join the scene, their chants reverberating like a storm breaking over an uneasy calm. Enigmatic, messianic projections flicker against the walls, igniting hope, fury, vendetta as well as vengeance, pointing out the fact: “Ideas and arts of resistance are bulletproof.” Flames engulf effigies of corporate greed and political betrayal, their shadows twisting into grotesque spectres of injustice, casting an eerie glow over the swelling resistance.

Then, chaos descends. Riot police storm the gathering, unleashing tear gas, water cannons, and lathi charges in ruthless waves. The air thickens with screams, smoke, and the sharp crack of batons. Amid the bedlam, an elderly woman’s agonized inaudible cry pierces the cacophony as she is hurled into the flames of a burning effigy, a chilling embodiment of justice immolated under the regime of crony oligarchical capitalism. The mood of the film fades to a suffocating blackness, leaving behind in the viewers’ minds only the indelible words: Justice Delayed is Justice Denied.

Throughout this agit-prop video, modern AI tools were used to craft the imagery, their occasional imperfections a testament to the inevitable limits of technology in capturing human suffering and resistance. Yet, these aberrations pale in comparison to the fiery spirit of solidarity that burns at the heart of this short film.

Furthermore, the unfolding narrative is interwoven with politically charged, antithetical representations that disrupt the linear flow, creating moments of tension and complexity. These juxtapositions challenge the audience to confront the stark contrasts between resilience and despair, silence and uproar, oppression and defiance—transforming the story into a tapestry of resistance that refuses over-simplification. Each disruption sharpens the emotional intensity, deepening the impact of the struggle depicted.

Dedicated to the DHFL victims—seemingly powerless, yet not entirely without the glimmer of hope. This is for those who stand amid the embers of resistance, their resolve refusing to be extinguished.
